My Participation in MT180 – National Final 2025¶

What is MT180?¶

Ma Thèse en 180 Secondes (MT180) is an international French-language competition inspired by the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) developed by the University of Queensland in Australia. It allows PhD students to present their research topic—in three minutes, in French, and using simple, accessible language—to a diverse audience.

The concept was adopted in 2012 in Quebec by Acfas (Association francophone pour le savoir) and has since expanded across the francophone world.

The National Final of MT180 took place on March 25, 2025.

My Experience¶

I had the opportunity to compete in the 2025 National Final of MT180 as one of five finalists, each representing a different background and research focus:

• 2 competitors from Syria
• 1 from Burundi
• 1 from Hungary
• And myself

My PhD explores the history and philosophy of Ukrainian science fiction literature, particularly how it mirrors the intellectual trajectory of European positivism—from techno-optimism to postmodern pessimism.

To communicate this complex and abstract topic in just three minutes, I transformed my thesis into a French rap performance. This creative format allowed me to engage the audience, simplify dense philosophical ideas, and honor the cultural rhythms of both science and storytelling.

My MT180 PhD Rap¶

Yo! écoute bien, c’est l’histoire d’un Ukrainien,  
Ma thèse ? La Science-Fiction, mon feu et mon lien.  
Les étoiles, les machines et les mondes lointains,  
Moi, petit gosse déjà, tu sais, je rêvais sans fin.

La Science-Fiction d’Ukraine et le positivisme  
Avançaient un peu ensemble, comme le même organisme.  
De techno-espoir aux désillusions,  
Un rêve brisé, tu sais, la même chanson.

Ils rêvaient du ciel, d’un monde en lumière,  
Mais la guerre a teint leurs vies en poussière.  
Les bombes ont parlé, il n’y a plus d’idéal,  
Le communisme? Bof! Juste un mirage fatal.

Comme le positivisme rêvant trop grand,  
Auguste Comte disait : "Kant nous ment".  
La science seule ? Pas ouf! C'était leur cri,  
Mais même la science, au fond, s’est trahie.

Tous les cygnes sont blancs ? Vraiment ?  
Un seul noir - et hop!-hop!-hop! - fini l’argument.  
Lyotard, Foucault ont tout dynamité,  
La vérité? Bof! Un mythe pour dominer.

Deux cents ans à chercher l’ultime vérité,  
L’amour vrai, les vrais hommes et la sincérité.  
Mais nul n’a compris ce que ça signifiait,  
Que faire, que croire? Ah bon?! Et que murmurer?

Kant, Comte, Sartre, Foucault, et cætera,  
Chacun son récit, chacun sa Torah.  
J’donne pas de leçon. C’est pas mon rôle,  
Le bonheur des uns fait le malheur des drôles.

À chacun son poison, chacun son destin,  
Le monde est bien plus vaste qu’on l’imaginait. Fin!

Participating in MT180 was not only a challenge in communication, but also an opportunity to bridge academic thought and creative performance. Presenting my research as a rap was a way to celebrate the intersection of science, literature, and culture—and to show that even the most complex ideas can be shared with clarity, rhythm, and heart.
